Flocktons Mount

Local architect William Flockton constructed The Mount between 1830 and 1832, holding an intriguing history. It earned the nickname “Flockton’s Folly” due to its perceived distance from the town center, raising doubts about its appeal. Flockton intentionally followed architectural trends popularized by Bath’s Royal Crescent and London’s Regent’s Park, creating a building resembling a country mansion with multiple separate dwellings within.

The Mount comprised eight apartments known as “genteel dwellings,” numbered from 2 to 16 along Newbold Lane towards Glossop Road. Flockton had great confidence in its quality and location, describing it as a “handsome Ionic edifice” surpassing surrounding buildings in Sheffield. The advantageous south-facing views overlooking Porter Valley made it a sought-after residential address for Sheffield’s upper social strata. The Mount’s success bolstered Flockton’s reputation, leading to the use of its design as the foundation for Wesley College nearby on Glossop Road in 1838.

Once home to the renowned 19th-century poet James Montgomery, the mount’s 8 original apartments were home to some of the city’s most prominent businessmen. This is not the only property we have with literary connections.

Purchase by John Walsh Ltd.

Initially purchased to house employees of the JT Walsh Ltd Department store, Tragedy hit in 1940 when their outlet was destroyed during the Sheffield blitz. The mount then became a temporary retail outlet for them until they could relocate back into the city center after the war.

Conversion to an office

In 1958 the building was sold to the United Steel Company which converted it into offices, It passed through many other companies such as British Steel to Norwich Union which became Aviva, On the journey a new adjoining building was added to the rear of the property adding extra office space.

Finally, after many years of functioning as an office, Thornsett Properties are refurbishing this architecturally stunning classical period building back into high-quality residential apartments for professionals looking to rent in Sheffield.
