Away from the students union and bars. Some of the city’s larger venues play hosts to an expansive choice of entertainment.

Sheffield’s music history is legendary, the steel city has produced some fabulous musicians over the past 50 years. With a rich unique history that could arguably rival bigger cities such as Manchester.

Sheffield has produced talented artists such as Def Leopard, Joe Cocker, Arctic Monkeys, The Human League, Bring Me The Horizon, Pulp, ABC, Moloko and Paul Carrack to name just a few. No surprise then that having such a big impact on the music scene. So many venues have sprung up to support the industry. And now many world-famous artists regularly include stops in them on extensive world tours.

Sporting firsts since 1857

Home to the birthplace of association football, but beyond our historic football connections, Sheffield venues also host other sports such as the world snooker championships held at the crucible theatre every year since 1977.

Sheffield is home to the English Institute of sport, a £24 million, multi-sport facility, a training venue for athletics, basketball, boxing, fencing, judo, netball, table tennis and volleyball. Sheffield Sharks basketball team use this venue for home matches.

Producing 5 world title winners Naseem Hamed, Kell Brook, Johnny Nelson, Clinton Woods, Paul Jones, Sheffield also has a strong history with boxing.

Sheffield Arena

Known For Music, Comedy, Sport

The largest Sheffield venue with a capacity of 13600 for concert events and 9300 for sport, Acts to appear here previously include One Direction, Westlife, Queen, Stereophonics, Liam Gallagher, Little mix, Comedy appearances include Russel brand, Lee Evans, Jack Whitehall, Eddie Izzard and Peter Kay. Sheffield arena is also home to the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team since 1991. Other events held include boxing and professional wrestling such as WWE.

Every year students from both Sheffield Hallam and The University of Sheffield assemble to watch the final game of their varsity play out as both university’s ice hockey teams play and the stadium fills to capacity.

Sheffield City Hall

Known For: Music, Comedy, Musicals, Tribute Acts

A grade II listed building in the heart of Sheffield, located near West street. Sheffield City Hall is a 2271 Capacity seated theatre (along with 2 additional smaller function rooms)

Music names to appear here are more retro in nature such as Billy Ocean, Midge Ure, 10cc, although contemporary acts such as Leona Lewis, James Morrison and Will Young have included the venue in their upcoming tours.

City hall is the perfect venue for comedy, you’ll find the likes of Jimmy Carr, Joe Lycett, Chris Ramsey, Milton Jones, Ed Bryne, Alan Carr, Jack Dee, Kevin Bridges, Russel Kane, Dawn French, Jason Manford and Al Murry all appearing here on their UK tours.

West end musicals occasionally take time out of London to tour the UK, you can catch up with spectacular shows such as We Will Rock You, and Made In Dagenham. With such a packed calendar there is something for everyone.

O2 Academy

Known for: Live Music / Club Nights /Tribute Acts

The O2 is a 2150 capacity music venue. Located in the former Roxy nightclub next-door to Sheffield Hallam University City centre campus. Like many 02 academies around the country, they are known for hosting more alternative music and club nights compared to arenas and theatres. As standing rooms with bars, they make the perfect gig experience venues.

Leadmill

Known For: Live Music /Comedy/ Club Nights

The Leadmill is Sheffield’s longest-running live music venue and nightclub. A true alternative and student venue, hosting cult bands, regular comedy events and legendary club nights. This 900 capacity venue is perfect for smaller more intimate events. See comedy legends and telly favourites such as Paul Merton, Ian Sterling, Rich Hall, Dom Joly, Tom Allen, Shaparak Khorsandi, and Chris McCausland. Indie music is a speciality with artists including Teenage Fanclub, James Bay, Bowling for Soup, The Wannadies and even Kiefer Sutherland touring with his band!

Crucible

Known For: Sport, Theatre, Comedy

Opened in 1971 this 980 capacity venue was originally designed as a theatre. It now hosts a range of performances from stand up with Nish Kumar, narrated stories and classical music performances. Located in this building is a smaller venue known as the studio where you can see a mixture of local/fringe and up and coming artists in a smaller 100-400 capacity venue.

Lyceum

Known For: Theatre, Musicals The Lyceum is a traditional theatre venue through and through, with over a hundred years of history.

Located next door to the crucible, This is the place to go to see world-famous shows touring from Theatre districts of London and New York, With shows such as Calender Girls, Chicago, School of rock, Bugsy Malone, Mamma Mia, The Commitments, Jersey Boys, Sister Act, Rocky Horror Show.

The venue also hosts other acts such as Derren Brown and the place to go for Panto every year!
