St Peters Close is a small alleyway and thoroughfare hidden in Sheffield’s local history. Located behind the cathedral, once home to a variety of businesses and institutions, some of which have been converted into a fantastic set of student flats. History of St Peters Close

Many of the buildings and features of St peters close have an interesting history. Some of the buildings include

The Old Bank House

Located just off Campo Lane, this building has a walkway on the left-hand side that takes you onto st peters close. Purportedly one of the oldest surviving brick buildings in Sheffield dating back to 1728. It once famously housed a bank with an interesting tale. Rumour has it of a story of the bank shutting down due to bankruptcy. On the day of the bank shutting, a traveller from Derbyshire visited. Unaware of the business closing to make a deposit. Allegedly the bank clerk took the deposit and the bank never reopened.

Taking the alley to the left of the Bank Chambers will take you on to St Peter’s close

The Printworks

On the left is a curved building that was once a printworks it’s since been converted into self-catering short-stay accommodation.

Traditional Street Lamp

Located In the middle of the close in front of number 5 and number 3 is a traditional street lamp, Erected between 1914 and 1935  many of Sheffield’s traditional street lamps were built to run off methane produced by sewers. Thankfully though it’s since been upgraded to run off electricity.

The synagogue that still bears scriptures

On the other end of St. Peters close at the corner with North Church Street is number 7 St. Peters close, once a synagogue for a congregation of 225 built for the Sheffield Jewish community in 1872. Above the old front door on North street is the inscription 1. Kings. Chap. 8. V 33. written above a Hebrew inscription. Referring to the verse

“When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and they return to You and confess Your name, praying and pleading with You in this temple”

This entranceway is now replaced by a window and access is through st peters close leading to flats 1 to 12. The building still retains its original external features while the inside has been modernised. Features include high arch shape windows, original external curved brick walls and roof apex ornaments.
